DIY Green Screen Photography (Save 20% from Skylarking)

We’re all aware of the use of computers and blue-screens to add backgrounds in the movies and television shows we watch, and — thanks to low-cost digital computers and cameras — now anyone can add fantastic backgrounds to their own photos, and the key is Green Screen Wizard. This software is great for the hobbyist or the professional.

Green Screen Wizard is a software and photo package that makes it easy for you to do professional Green Screen Special Effects (also known as “ChromaKey Effects”) with your camera and computer. And, as they say, it’s as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Take a picture of someone against the provided 5’x7′ portable green screen backdrop
  2. Transfer the picture to you computer
  3. Match the picture to a provided background, and Green Screen Wizard does the rest.

Green Screen Test Drive. The basic trial package of Green Screen Wizard costs $79 for the next 4 days. But Skylarking readers can take 20% off ANY PURCHASE at GreenScreenWizard, where it’s easy to get started producing green screen effects for photography and video! Enter GSPP20JUNE during checkout.

The 20% off code expires on 6/30/10.

Green Screen Lite includes:

  1. 5×7 Popup Screen
  2. 20 Magazine Covers
  3. 120 Backgrounds in six collections

Magazine BackgroundsUpgrade. Maybe you’re a professional or semi-professional events photographer. If you decide you like the trial package and you want to do more, you can apply $50 from your trial package purchase towards an upgrade. The full package is available as a digital download for $99, or you can have the physical package shipped to you for about $170.

Their standalone photography software runs on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. They also sell Photoshop Plugins that run on Windows and Macintosh computers.

Work 52 percent faster with a 24 inch monitor

I was reading an exclusive survey article “Get the Most Out of Your Home” in the April 2010 issue of Money magazine. When discussing the home office they reported:

Researchers at the University of Utah have found that people using 24-inch computer screens worked 52% faster than those using 18-inchers when doing tasks like editing a document and copying numbers between spreadsheets.

They went on to suggest that you get one for as little as $199, but I’ve found a couple of nice refurbished 23 and 24 inch monitors at TigerDirect for $160 to $170, and a new 23-inch for $190. No extra charge for shipping.

Dell 23 inch Widescreen Full HD LCD Monitor (Refurbished Dell S2309W)

This monitor is not only useful for standard home office work and study, but it is also great for viewing movies and photos, playing games, or even editing video. I checked one out in person and found the images had great lifelike detail and brilliant vivid colors. its typical high contrast ratio of 1000:1 delivers deep blacks and stark whites. It’s DVI-D connector lets you view high-definition multimedia content from Blu-ray Disc drives on desktops and notebooks. It also has a standard VGA connector for use on older computers. Its sleek, glossy bezel (thats the frame around the screen) fits in beautifully in any decor. Plus the tilt-adjustable panel lets you position the display to a comfortable viewing angle. Buy a refurbished Dell S2309W with free shipping for $160 at Tigerdirect.

Acer 24 inch Widescreen HD LCD Monitor (Refurbished Acer P244WBD)

The Acer P244WBD 24″ Widescreen Monitor compares very well to the Dell model above, and your getting the full 24 inch HD image here. It, too, has a stylish sheer glossy black bezel that’ll look beautiful on your desktop. I felt the blacks were even deeper on this monitor and some scans of some old black and white photos I had look exceptionally good. They didn’t have the blue or greent tint that I often see on other color monitors. Buy a refurbished Acer P244 WBD 24 inch HD LCD monitor at Tigerdirect for only $170.

Viewsonic 23 inch Widescreen LCD HD Monitor (New! Viewsonic VA2323wm)

You can get greater productivity with this 23 inch widescreen LCD HD monitor from Viewsonic. It’s large enough to view two full sized documents, side-by-side onscreen. Or you can have 2 or more programs visible onscreen simultaneously. The VA2323wm is competitively priced, and includes two hidden stereo speakers.

It only costs $190 to get this new Viewsonic 23 inch widescreen HD LCD monitor from TigerDirect.

Coupons to Save on Best Sellers at TigerDirect until March 13

Oh, man, I hate including the number 13 in any of my headlines, but at least that date isn’t a Friday, it’s a Saturday. Small consolation.

Here’s a list of some best selling items I’ve found at Tigerdirect.com. I’m uncluding coupon codes you can use at checkout to save even more on their already low prices. You can check out their special pricing for Skylarking readers here, or read on while I spotlight some of the hot items.

SAVE $10 on an EVGA GeForce 9500 GT Video Card

($59 after using coupon code FEC1228 at checkout.) Do your computer games or video images appear to “stutter” or seem to move in an unusal manner? Then you should consider getting this video card replacement. It uses its own 1 gigabyte of DDR2 RAM (memory) instead of sharing the regular memory used by your computer’s programs. All you need is an available PCIe, or PCI express 2.0, slot on your motherboard. (Contact me or your manufacturer to find out if your computer has such capability.)

If you need real high end video support for 3D gaming, then consider getting two of these cards since they support SLI Dual Link technology. With SLI you can have two video cards linked together for double the video processing power. One card alone provides all the high def power you’ll need for gaming or video playback. Imagine the potential of two cards.

Each card comes with two DVI connectors and adapters for connecting your PC to any monitor or an HDTV. Two connectors allows you to have two monitors connected to your PC, if you need that. For example, I’m using two monitors on my Windows 7 computer, so I can run a different program on each monitor.

Dual Monitor setup on one PC

Right now I have the Tigerdirect site on one screen while I’m writing this post in another screen. Or I could be playing a video on one while working on the other. A client of mine uses two of these video cards for running 4 monitors on his home computer. He’s a day trader, and it allows him to monitor the stock market on multiple web sites while communicating with his colleagues.

Additional specs: Supports Microsoft® DirectX® 10 games, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc® movies with brilliant clarity — as long as you have a HD or Blu-ray capable DVD player in your computer — powered by the PureVideo® HD engine. Include GeForce GPU support for NVIDIA PhysX technology for all you high tech gamers for a more dynamic and realistic experience. Full Vista Aero 3D support.

SAVE $27 on OCZ 4GB PC3-10666 Platinum RAM

(Regularly $106.99, now only $79.99 after $20 mail-in rebate (expires 03/31/10) and $7 instant savings.) Most new PCs today can handle 4 gigabytes of RAM (memory), but when you bought it it probably came with only 2 GB.  Now not just any RAM will do, but I’ve never had a problem yet with memory chips from OCZ. More RAM makes your computer start faster, your programs start and run faster, and your hard drive doesn’t work so hard either. Let your hard drive take it easy with these memory chips. I’d recommend checking with tech supprt at TigerDirect to make sure this memory is appropriate for your PC.

Are you running a 64-bit operating system? Then you might consider getting two pairs since your computer may be able to handle up to 8 gigabytes of RAM. Just go into your Windows Control panel and double click on System to see if you’re running a 64-bit OS. It will be clearly indicated.

Tech specs for those in the know:  This PC3-10666 RAM designed specifically for the upcoming Intel® P55 Chipset and subsequent Intel® Core™ i7, i5, and i3 (Socket 1156) processors. Configured for dual channel mode, these ultra-compatible 4GB kits ensure optimal performance with an ideal combination of low power requirements at 1333MHz.

I’ll talk more about some of the specials I’ve found, but here are a few quickies for now:

SAVE $40 – FREE Shipping – BFG GeForce 9800 GT Video Card. This 1 gigabyte GDDR3 equipped card fits into any PCIe 2.0 slot on your motherboard. Like the card above it supports dual monitors with its two DVI connectors for use on your monitor or HDTV. Regularly $139.99, now only $99.99* after $10 rebate (expires 03/31/10) and $30 instant savings.

SAVE $50 – FREE Shipping – Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300. Get a high speed processor for your demanding programs. This has a 2.50GHz clock speed for a 1333MHz FSB (front system bus). This is a Quad Core processor for “original equipment manufacturers” (OEM). That means it costs a lot less because it doesn’t come in a colorful box like you’d see on the shelf. Uses a Socket 775 connector. $149.99* after $40 MIR, rebate expires 03/15/10.

Black Friday at TigerDirect

The day has come. Black Friday. The biggest retail sale day of the year and the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Here at Skylarking I’ll be keeping my eyes open for some great deals, and hopefully some coupon codes I can pass on to you. Remember, I only comment on products that I consider to be worthwhile bargains or valuable items and services considering my own perceptions of trends in home and office computers and entertainment. You can read more about my decision making process in Skylarking’s Disclaimer and Privacy page. I am not being wined, dined, or entertained by any of the companies and services I review here.

TigerDirect: “Pink Friday”

Usually the retail industry refers to the day after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday”. It’s usually the biggest sale day of the year and they typically make a profit which puts them “in the black” as opposed to a loss which puts them “in the red”.

TigerDirect is calling it “Pink Friday” because they will be contributing a portion of their sales to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for Breast Cancer. They’ll also have a Live Webcast all day long where they’ll be offering prizes, giveaways, and more (also known as “fun”). I’ll be checking it out once I get my shopping done for the day. Woo hoo!

Follow the Links! They have too much going on for me to talk about it all here, so click on the banners  at left and above to check it all out. If I had to single out some items they would be:

sonysale Sony Laptop: They have a one day only offer on a Sony laptop with a 15.5 inch screen, 3 GB or RAM (memory), an incredible large $320 GB hard drive (storage) running with a Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor, and Windows 7 Home premium (64-bit). You’ll get it for $580 which is about $70 off their usual price. plus you get that free shipping offer, and you could potentially save another $5 if you use Google Checkout. Click the banner at left (The webcast one over there <<<) and then scroll down to find this one … fast!

acer-netbookAcer Aspire One Netbook: Netbooks! Netbooks! Netbooks! I want one and this is the one I would get. This model has received great reviews. If you need a small portable computer for web access, then check this one out. It has an Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB of memory, and a sizeable 160GB hard drive for storing files. It also runs on Windows XP, has a memory card reader, built-in speakers, WiFi, Ethernet, and webcam. It comes in pink, but you can easily cover that up with a slip case cover. It’s only $229 with free shipping. If you don’t get it for yourself, then get one for me …please.

tomtomTom Tom XL 340 Auto GPS. Know someone — other than me — who won’t stop for direction but really should? Get ’em a Tom Tom. This is a new model for only $99. It comes with North American maps, spoken instructions, 7 million points of interest to check out in their travels, plus a portion of the sale goes to breast cancer research. Give the gift of “knowing where you’re going”.

Much much more to see! They also have gift guides for any price range, age group, or gender.

Friday ends in the black for retail outlets, hopefully, and Monday is cyber. Monday is the day the computer retailers offer some more big savings on electronics. Buy.com has you covered both days. Here are some links for you to check out their offerings.

My TigerDirect Recommendations

ebillmeHere are a few items worth looking at over at TigerDirect.com this weekend. Plus you can save $30 on any order over $100 (before tax and shipping) when you purchase using eBillMe for the first time. Just select eBillMe at checkout, TigerDirect emails you a bill, and then you can pay cash at any MoneyGram location near you, or from your online banking account.

Refurbished Clearance Event: TigerDirect is clearing out the refurbished items inventory. These are generally items that were returned because the original buyer changed their mind, or realized they ordered the wrong item, returned gifts, or items that were missing parts (which have since been repackaged in full). Here are a few standout items:

Asus Essentio

Asus Essentio

Asus Intel Pentium Desktop PC ($300): This looks like a hot item (aka very desirable). Asus is one of the leading motherboard manufacturers in the world. This unit comes with an Intel Pentium E2200 2.,2GHz dual core processor, and 4 GB DDR2 RAM (Memory. 4 GB is the most you can add to any 32 bit computer these days). It also has a DVD burner, an HDMI video connector for plugging into a large screen HDTV or monitor, a VGA for use with your current monitor, a 640 GB hard drive (storage), wired and wireless internet capability (very nice), and a media card reader that handles MMC, SecureDigital (SD), and MemoryStick (MS). That will allow you to transfer your photos from your digital camera easily. TigerDirect says they are running out of these, so you better act fast.

Satellite L355-S7905

Satellite L355-S7905

Toshiba 17″ Notebook ($400): I love Toshiba laptops and notebooks. In my opinion they’re a leader in the market. This notebook computer has an Intel Celeron processor,  3 GB or RAM (Memory), a 160 GB hard drive (storage), a DVD Burner, a 17 inch screen with a fantastic 1440 by 900 resolution, a media card reader for MemoryStick (PRO), SecureDigital (SD), and MMC. It runs on on Windows Vista Basic. (You can always upgrade to Windows 7 on October 22.)

HP PhotoSmart C4580

HP PhotoSmart C4580 All-in-One Color Printer ($70): This color printer also scans and copies. You can insert your media card from your camera to print your digital photos directly. The card reader supports MemoryStick (MS), MemoryStick Duo, SecureDigital (SD), xD, and MMC. Another great feature is its Wireless (WiFi) capabiliuty which allows you to print directly from your wireless computer or laptop to the printer. The paper tray holds 100 sheets, and it prints at a top speed of 23 pages per minute. Color 4×6 photos print in about 25 seconds.

Acer Aspire One

Acer Aspire One

Pink Acer Aspire One AOA150-1483 Netbook ($240): Need a netbook? Want to run it on a 3G network? Then I highly recommend this Acer Aspire netbook. Whenever someone comes to me looking for a laptop or notebook, Acer is always in my top five list. This netbook is no exception. It comes with an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, 1 GB or RAM (memory), a 160 GB hard drive (storage). One of the best features of this netbook is it has 3G connectivity capability for use on the same wireless networks used by today’s smartphones. (You’ll probably have to get an account with a cellular provider to access it though. 3G isn’t free yet.) Other features include a media card reader (Memory Stick, xD, SD, and MS PRO), a microphone input and a headphone port, plus wired or wireless Internet capability. Admittedly, it’s pink, but it’s loaded. You could always opt to add on a $15 or $20 netbook skin wrap to hide it’s color.

There are still many more items to choose from at TigerDirect’s refurbished items clearance sale.

By the way, it was my birthday this week, so you could always send me something as a gift.  (Wink). Yes, I know, I’m shameless. … Ship it to Skylarking  @ 2094 Newbridge Road, Bellmore, NY 11710. … Shameless.

Iomega Prestige Portable HD

Iomega Prestige Portable HD

250 GB Portable Hard Drive, $60. I can remember a time when hard drives didn’t hold much more than 10 floppy disks could, and those drives were HEAVY. Now we have hard drives that hold millions of floppy disks worth of data, and they weigh so little. One such drive is the Iomega Prestige Portable Hard Drive for $60. It holds 250 GB of files, connects to any computer with a USB port, gets fast data transfer rates with USB 2.0 technology, and it weighs less than a pound. I compared this price to the Iomega 250GB Prestige Portable Hard Drive on Amazon.com, and take a look at who ships and sells it for Amazon. Pretty funny, huh?

Looking for an LCD monitor? Why not check out this 22-inch Widescreen LCD Montor from AOC for $139.99. You can also look this one up under AOC 2217V 22-inch monitor at Amazon.com. Look at the shipper and seller, again. (wink) I told you TigerDirect.com was a great company.

Netgear Wireless B/G/N

Netgear Wireless B/G/N - Recertified

Over the weekend, a friend of mine called up looking for information on setting up a wireless network in their home this week. I told them they’ll need a wireless router and some wireless adapters for their desktop and tower PCs. If you need a wireless adapter, then here’s a price that’s really a steal: $8.97! This is the Netgear WG311 PCI Wireless Network Adapter which can be found for anywhere between $30 and $60 elsewhere, and you can get it for less than $10. It’s recertified, but all that means it someone got it as a gift and didn’t want it, or they bought the wrong one and took it back for an exchange, etc. It’s been repackaged for resale. It’s just a pre-owned item.

This wireless adapter supports all the WiFi standards: B, G, and N. I was looking at Wireless N adapters a few months ago, and they were going for about $60. I know someone who’s trying to setup a dozen PCs for wireless. A dozen of these re-certified adapters will only cost $107. I be lucky to get 2, maybe 4, new ones for that price elsewhere.

Back to School Savings (9/1 – 9/6)

Good Morning! Here are a few items you may find of use from Buy.com. Most of these offers end this coming Sunday, and from what I’ve seen so far, some are running out. So hop to it.

datatraveller112Kingston 16GB DataTraveler 112 USB Flash Drive
Only $29 (Lists for $66). FREE BUDGET SHIPPING. Offer ends 9/6/09
A 16 gigbyte flash drive is perfect for storing all your school files for all your classes this year. The modern classroom isn’t just pens and pencils anymore. Digital cameras and recorders and commonplace nowadays, and you need a lot of storage to hold it all. Plus its great for transferring files from school to home, laptop, to PC, and vice versa. Remember floppy disks? This is equal to more than 11,000 floppy disks. (Did you know floppies last less than one year? One of my flash drive went through a load of laundry once 5 years ago and I am still using it today. It has some nice looking scratches on it.)

brotherlabellerBrother Electronic Labeling System – Refurbished
Only $20. (Lists for $80). FREE BUDGET SHIPPING. Offer ends 9/6/09

This labeling system is great for printing all the labels you need to tag all your kids school gear. The labels are printed using a thermal system whcih means the print won’t run if the tags get wet, so they’ll stand up in the ran on the way to school, or the wear and tear of those gym classes. This beats handwriting with the Sharpie. I’ve had one of these for several years now, and I highly recommend it.

canonpixmaCanon PIXMA MP490 Photo All-In-One Inkjet Color Printer
Only $70. (Lists for $100). FREE BUDGET SHIPPING. Offer ends 9/6/09
Back to school, and back to the printer. Why not get a new printer for yourself, and let the kids have the old printer? Afterall, they’ll have a lot of homework and reports to do. And that means lots of printing. Why not get a reliable Canon printer? Canon is always at the top of my printer manufacturer list. It’s great for printing photos straight from your camera’s memory card, too.

No matter what level of education you’re in, there’s no easier way to carry all your books and gear than with a nice nylon backpack. (Hmm, a gratuiotous use of the word nylon if I ever read one. Be thankful I didn’t mention it was lightweight, too.) It also has a padded compartment for holding a laptop with a 15.4″ screen. Not an issue if you have a netbook, eh? It’s colors are grey and black, and it features an air channel between your back and the pack so that your back doesn’t get all sweaty before the cold weather sets in.

All work and no play yada yada yada. Great for the kids, and great fun for you too. Anyone out there work in an office that doesn’t mind if you bring a missile launcher to work? I work at home, so I don’t think the boss will mind. I know a few guys who work at Google, and theb there are my buddies at the old IT department I used to work in. I think they might like to have one of these at the end of the day. Might be fun at the college computer lab on a slow day.

coffeemakerChambord French Press Coffee Maker (8 Cup, Stainless Steel)
$36. FREE BUDGET SHIPPING. Offer ends ???
It’s not tech, but I drink coffee, too, and I guess some of you do too.  Start or end the day in style with a fresh pot of coffee from this French press style coffee maker. It makes up to 8 cups of coffee. That’s a lot more than my puny Mr. Coffee machine makes. Maybe I should switch?

whitneyhoustonI Look To You – Whitney Houston
Only $9.97. (Lists for $14). FREE BUDGET SHIPPING. Offer ends …
It’s been 7 years since Whitney’s put out an album. What is she? A Vulcan? (That’s a Star Trek: Amok Time reference, folks. Look it up, please.) Once upon a time she was saving all her love for you, now she saves it all up for the occasional CD release. So, come on, Whitney, show us what you got; it’s been a long long time. It’s back to school, old school. Pop the CD in the car when your driving the kids to school. Or pop it into your PC’s CD player and copy it into your iTunes library for your iPod. I personally prefer the sound recorded from my CDs over the ones I download on iTunes.

Omron HEM-790IT Blood Pressure Monitor
Only $74. (Lists for $130). FREE BUDGET SHIPPING. Offer ends: ???
Too much coffee, too much chasing the kids? Too much late night cramming? Well, make sure you’re not overdoing it with this blood pressure monitor. I’ve read these things work better that the one by the counter in your local CVS or pharmacy, and my doctor has started recommending I get one, too, because of my cheese and salted pumpkin seeds diet. You’re saving more than $50 on the price here, so snatch one up while the offer lasts.

That’s all I have for today, folks. Hmm, I cannot resist throwing in an offer for the Sookie Stackhouse Novels. After all, it’s not about me. “It’s all for you.”  That’s not Whitney. That’s not Star Trek. That’s a Janet reference. Where’s my coffee?
