Black Friday at TigerDirect

The day has come. Black Friday. The biggest retail sale day of the year and the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Here at Skylarking I’ll be keeping my eyes open for some great deals, and hopefully some coupon codes I can pass on to you. Remember, I only comment on products that I consider to be worthwhile bargains or valuable items and services considering my own perceptions of trends in home and office computers and entertainment. You can read more about my decision making process in Skylarking’s Disclaimer and Privacy page. I am not being wined, dined, or entertained by any of the companies and services I review here.

TigerDirect: “Pink Friday”

Usually the retail industry refers to the day after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday”. It’s usually the biggest sale day of the year and they typically make a profit which puts them “in the black” as opposed to a loss which puts them “in the red”.

TigerDirect is calling it “Pink Friday” because they will be contributing a portion of their sales to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for Breast Cancer. They’ll also have a Live Webcast all day long where they’ll be offering prizes, giveaways, and more (also known as “fun”). I’ll be checking it out once I get my shopping done for the day. Woo hoo!

Follow the Links! They have too much going on for me to talk about it all here, so click on the banners  at left and above to check it all out. If I had to single out some items they would be:

sonysale Sony Laptop: They have a one day only offer on a Sony laptop with a 15.5 inch screen, 3 GB or RAM (memory), an incredible large $320 GB hard drive (storage) running with a Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor, and Windows 7 Home premium (64-bit). You’ll get it for $580 which is about $70 off their usual price. plus you get that free shipping offer, and you could potentially save another $5 if you use Google Checkout. Click the banner at left (The webcast one over there <<<) and then scroll down to find this one … fast!

acer-netbookAcer Aspire One Netbook: Netbooks! Netbooks! Netbooks! I want one and this is the one I would get. This model has received great reviews. If you need a small portable computer for web access, then check this one out. It has an Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB of memory, and a sizeable 160GB hard drive for storing files. It also runs on Windows XP, has a memory card reader, built-in speakers, WiFi, Ethernet, and webcam. It comes in pink, but you can easily cover that up with a slip case cover. It’s only $229 with free shipping. If you don’t get it for yourself, then get one for me …please.

tomtomTom Tom XL 340 Auto GPS. Know someone — other than me — who won’t stop for direction but really should? Get ’em a Tom Tom. This is a new model for only $99. It comes with North American maps, spoken instructions, 7 million points of interest to check out in their travels, plus a portion of the sale goes to breast cancer research. Give the gift of “knowing where you’re going”.

Much much more to see! They also have gift guides for any price range, age group, or gender.

Iomega Prestige Portable HD

Iomega Prestige Portable HD

250 GB Portable Hard Drive, $60. I can remember a time when hard drives didn’t hold much more than 10 floppy disks could, and those drives were HEAVY. Now we have hard drives that hold millions of floppy disks worth of data, and they weigh so little. One such drive is the Iomega Prestige Portable Hard Drive for $60. It holds 250 GB of files, connects to any computer with a USB port, gets fast data transfer rates with USB 2.0 technology, and it weighs less than a pound. I compared this price to the Iomega 250GB Prestige Portable Hard Drive on Amazon.com, and take a look at who ships and sells it for Amazon. Pretty funny, huh?

Looking for an LCD monitor? Why not check out this 22-inch Widescreen LCD Montor from AOC for $139.99. You can also look this one up under AOC 2217V 22-inch monitor at Amazon.com. Look at the shipper and seller, again. (wink) I told you TigerDirect.com was a great company.

Netgear Wireless B/G/N

Netgear Wireless B/G/N - Recertified

Over the weekend, a friend of mine called up looking for information on setting up a wireless network in their home this week. I told them they’ll need a wireless router and some wireless adapters for their desktop and tower PCs. If you need a wireless adapter, then here’s a price that’s really a steal: $8.97! This is the Netgear WG311 PCI Wireless Network Adapter which can be found for anywhere between $30 and $60 elsewhere, and you can get it for less than $10. It’s recertified, but all that means it someone got it as a gift and didn’t want it, or they bought the wrong one and took it back for an exchange, etc. It’s been repackaged for resale. It’s just a pre-owned item.

This wireless adapter supports all the WiFi standards: B, G, and N. I was looking at Wireless N adapters a few months ago, and they were going for about $60. I know someone who’s trying to setup a dozen PCs for wireless. A dozen of these re-certified adapters will only cost $107. I be lucky to get 2, maybe 4, new ones for that price elsewhere.

Portable DVD and CD Drive for $40

I run a computer repair and service business apart from my blogging activities here at Skylarking. Often enough my clients have damaged CD or DVD drives which prevent me from loading my diagnostic softare onto their systems. Or perhaps they’ve purchased a new application, such as Office 2007, and they are having difficulty installing it becuase they have a defective drive.

In such a case I need to use my own external drive. I recently acquired a new external and portable DVD and CD drive from TigerDirect.com. The one I’ve purchased is the Lite-On ETDU10896 External Slim DVD ROMicon which costs only $40. It’s been working great for me. Most recently I used it to transfer some files from a client’s old computer to their new computer. I also used it to reinstall Microsoft Windows Vista for another client; their hard drive had recently failed.

liteondriveI also ordered the 1 year replacement plan on the drive for $15, so if anything goes wrong with it after the manufacturer’s 12 month warranty runs out, TigerDirect.com will send me a new or similar one. So I’m covered for two years total. Not bad for a $40 drive. I wish my car could go so far on $40.

This drive is a “plug and play” drive, which means you just plug it in to the USB port of your computer and it works. Your computer will automatically recognize it as a CD/DVD drive with no help from you. It has only one cable so there are no questions of “Where does this go?”

This drive isn’t used for recording or burning disks, but it will read many different formats including writeable and rewriteable disks such as DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R9, DVD-R9, CD-R, CD-RW. It doesn’t need to be plugged into a wall outlet as it receives all the power it needs from its USB connection.

There’s been a lot of chat on the Internet and in the press concerning bloggers getting paid to review products and web sites. (Most notably in the Wall Street Journal last month). I get approached a few times a week to write about particular products and web sites, but I always offer my honest opinion in my posts. I have turned down many, many more offers than I’ve accepted.

The same applies to the products in this post. I have only highlighted products that I think are worthwhile and provide a significant savings compared to their regular price.

Synaps 7″ Digital Picture Frame

Whenever I shop, I’m always on the lookout for good prices on digital picture frames.  That is, if I pass one in sthe store, I’m going to check it out. In my opinion the technology behind these devices isn’t that complicated, so I find it difficult to justify spending over $80 to $100 for one. Today, I spotted the Synaps 7″ Digital Picture Frame with its walnut wooden finishicon online at TigerDirect.com. It’s selling for $39.99 right now, and if you’re not sure about the Synaps name, then you can always add on a one or two year service plan from TigerDirect for as little as $15 or $18 respectively. Customer reviews for the product have been very favorable.

The frame also allows you to run a digital slideshow of images, so the picture is constantly changing. The frame can be rotated for displaying images in a portrait or landscape orientation. The image at right shows the landscape orientation.

For the techies and digital photo enthusiasts, here are the spec1ifications (specs for short): It has a TFT LCD display which is 7 inches diagonal, with an visual aspect ratio of 16:9. The screen resolution is 480 x 234, and it supports MMC, SD, MS media cards. Photos must be in a JPEG format. The frame measures 7.9″ x 5.3″ x 1.3″. You can see the controls in the image at left (click the image to enlarge).

The Acer X Series LCD monitors have a splendid combination of uncompromising performance and outstanding value. Its sleek silver/black color scheme, softly contoured bezel, and sturdy base depict a classy, functional design that’ll look great on your desktop.

I just bought a 19″ monitor this week, and I’m an considering sending it back and ordering the Acer X223 WBD in its place. New Computers for K-12, pt. 2

In yesterday’s post I started discussing some new ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs) for K-12 students as many school districts across the nation attempt to increase access to computers and the research sources on the Internet. In 2003, the U>S> Census bureau revealed that 5% of high school juniors and seniors hadn’t used a computer, while 20% hadn’t used the Internet. (See the report)

Yesterday, I showed you two UMPCs: the Intel Classmate and the Asus Eee PC series. Today, I have two more computers which are being used in one-to-one computer ownersehip programs in school districts across the nation: the HP Mini-Notebook, and the Everex Cloudbook.
